Saving Babies One Breath at a Time

Over 50 doctors and nurses from the northern region of Serbia gathered in the city of Novi Sad to be trained in the techniques of resuscitating new-born babies.  They were trained by Latter-day Saint doctors George Bennett, an anesthesiologist from Farmington, Utah and Dr. George Groberg, a pediatrician from Idaho Falls, Idaho.  They were accompanied by Sis Marcia Bennett who is the nerve center of the training.  They gave up their Thanksgiving with their families to travel to Serbia to present the two-day training course.  The Bennett’s have been doing this for 5 years and have just sighed up to continue for another 2 ½ years.  Dr Groberg is one of the pioneers of this program and has been involved for over 15 years.

The doctors and nurses were taught the special techniques of resuscitating new-born babies that don’t breathe on their own at birth when time is critical.  The special techniques must be performed within seconds after the birth if the baby doesn’t breathe on it’s own to prevent lack of oxygen to the brain or death.

The church donated mannequins and other equipment for the training.  The idea is for the trained doctors and nurses to go back to their respective areas with the mannequins and equipment they have received and continue the teaching process by teaching the other doctors, nurses, midwives and other health care professionals the techniques of resuscitating babies.

The Doctor specialists receive calls frequently from doctors and nurses they have trained saying “I saved another baby today using our techniques”.

Elder & Sis. Densley, the organizing Humanitarian Missionaries in Serbia, heard the comment “if the life of just one baby is saved, the program was worth it”.
