Happy Mother’s Day to all you wonderful moms out there.  Hope you had as nice a day as I did.

Pic #1.  We visited a beautiful park on the outskirts of Belgrade called Avala Park.  This is Ron and Mama Stan (Nikola’s mother) at the Russian Memorial in the park.  Serbia and Russia were allies during the war.

#2.  At the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier also in the park.

#3.  The new Avala communications tower.  The old one was blown up by the U.S. during the war in 1995 (we think 95).

#4.  Notice the clouds.  A huge thunderstorm was brewing and hit just when we went to the top of the tower.

#5.  We paused only long enough for a photo then back down the elevator as fast as we could get there.  I have never been so scared!  The wind was blowing so hard that the tower was swaying 10-15 feet back and forth.  Rain was pouring in and lightning was flashing all around us.  Ron looked at me and said, “well, if we go, we go together!”  That was really comforting!

#6.  We left Avala and went to the hospital to see Nikola’s father.  He is in this huge hospital where he just had surgery on his broken leg—again.  He broke it 7 months ago and it wasn’t healing because it wasn’t set properly.  The bone was never lined up straight so they installed some rings around his leg with pins going into the bone and depending how they tighten the screws, it pulled the bone into alignment so that it can heal properly.  They estimate it will take 9 months in this “halo” for his leg.

#7.  On Monday, May 10, we went with the elders to help Nikola do yard work at his house.  His grass was over a foot high and so we all got together and got the job done quickly!  It was a really fun day.  This is Elder Beus.

#8.  Elder Christiansen raking the grass.  It was too wet to use the grass catcher so they raked it all.

#9.  Elder Armstrong.

#10.  After the job was complete, a friendly game of leg wrestling took place.  Elder Beaumont, from Canada, was the winner among the young elders.  He had a match-off with Big Ron to determine the ultimate winner and we are proud to announce that BIG “D” and the U.S.A. reigned supreme once again!!!!  That will teach these young punks to mess with their elders!!!!!  (Just kidding)

#11.  Ron and our great elders sharpening the tools when the job was done.

#12.  Back row:  E. Beaumont from Canada, E. Armstrong from Taylorsville, Ut.,  Mama Stan (Nikola’s mom), Elder Beus from Wash. State, & E. Christiansen from Highland, Ut.

#13.  Nikola in his kitchen preparing pizza for us.  His Mother had prepared a beautiful banquet for us with many traditional Serbian dishes as well.  It was the perfect ending to a really great day!
